This is a great opportunity to remind everyone that Communikitchen designs and develops websites for its clients using Drupal, one of the most complete and versatile content-management systems. Drupal is open-source, and all its parts are created and maintained by a network of developers all over the world. In correspondence with the platform’s tenth birthday (Drupal was born in Belgium in 2001), version 7 was released officially on January 5 of this year.
The release of Drupal 7 entails the end of support for Drupal 5. This means not only that new functionalities will not be developed and distributed, but also that there will be no further security updates to version 5.
What this means for us
Of all websites designed and developed by Communikitchen in the last few years, those launched by the summer of 2008 are built on Drupal 5. In order to guarantee the highest security, and at the same time keep design standards up to date, we will perform updates of these websites to a more recent version of Drupal. Depending on each website’s functionality, the choice will go to either Drupal 6 or Drupal 7. (Some advanced functionality is not yet available to Drupal 7, or isn’t stable enough to be used securely.)
In the next few months we will contact those whose websites were built by the end of summer 2008 to discuss the different options available.
What this means for Sproond
Sproond is based on Drupal 6, the mature version of Drupal. Not only is it fully developed, but its support will continue for a few more years, until the release of version 8, whose development has just begun.
